Nitrogen source handles violent extremes

For a recent oilfield application in Sudan, Parker Hannifin had to call on all its experience as a system provider to deliver robust, reliable gas generation equipment for operation in this remote and hostile environment Middlesex-based Motivair International was tasked as prime contractor with building a skid-mounted compressed air generation system for oilfield instrumentation - within another part of the contract, there was a requirement for a reliable source of nitrogen for testing purposes

For this requirement, thanks to significant back up and design support, Motivair International opted for a NitroSource system from Parker Hannifin, as it removes all reliance on gas cylinders and generates a 99.5% pure supply of nitrogen directly from a compressed air stream.

According to the Director of Motivair's International Division: "Parker Hannifin had the right system for this contract".

"Thanks to its understanding of our exact needs, Parker provided us with a full suite of services that allowed us to engineer its systems seamlessly into our own assembly".

"The NitroSource system not only integrated mechanically with the rest of the assembly, but also electronically with the overall control infrastructure".

The NitroSource system is based on Parker Hannifin's hollow fibre membrane technology, which separates air into nitrogen and an oxygen-enriched air stream.

The system comprises a main unit that can be expanded with the addition of a further five subunits and, thanks to a master/slave feature, up to 11 main units and their associated subunits can be combined and controlled as if they were one.

Equipped with a digital data management system, parameters such as flow, pressure and residual oxygen concentration can be monitored, stored and communicated to other devices or control systems.

The NitroSource system provides users with a raft of benefits.

These include eliminating the inconveniences and costs of cylinder gas as well as the reliance on external deliveries and outside vendors.

This, in turn, means that the storage space and costs involved with cylinders are removed, long term cost stability is assured and - just as importantly - users can control their own supply by providing the volume and purity required.

Reliability and robustness are also essential - as this application demonstrates.

In this example, the equipment is located remotely and has to work autonomously for extended periods, 24 hours a day; it also regularly experiences violent extremes of temperature, high humidity and a constant barrage by wind blown sand.
