Course brings SolidWorks and Excel together
Three-day course addresses the development of computer aided design automation and application linkages.
Professional Education International's "SolidWorks/Excel integration using VBA-API" course will be held in Encino, California from 13th to 15th November 2006.
The course will be taught by leading expert Chris Stimson.
This three-day course addresses the development of computer aided design automation and application linkages.
The course will explain the process of creating data linkages between SolidWorks and Excel.
An understanding of this process will enable the development of customised SolidWorks tools.
"For example, a point cloud tool can be developed for importing data points into SolidWorks from Excel or any text file", says Stimson.
There will be a key discussion on SolidWorks automation as it relates to SolidWorks parts, assembly and drawing documents.
This will facilitate a design engineer to develop sub procedures to implement tedious processes such as transferring a solid model to a drawing format.
This hands-on workshop is designed to have an immediate impact on the way that SolidWorks CAD users can integrate their CAD models with systems level analysis, trade studies, and system level optimisation.
Excel Spreadsheets are utilised as the system level tool integration platform.
The underlying key to implementing this process is for the user to gain experience and knowledge on the use of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in both Excel and SolidWorks.
Extensive use of VBA is the key to unlocking all the features of SolidWorks and reducing the amount of tedious work.
This provides the ability to move away from the CAD interface to the more familiar Excel application.
Those who attend this intensive hands-on workshop experience a dramatic change in their use of SolidWorks in the design integration process.

The instructor, Chris Stimson, received his Master's Degree in mechanical engineering from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and is currently employed as a Project Engineer at Moog in Chatsworth, California.
He is a SolidWorks/Excel Applications Specialist for SpreadsheetWorld and is an instructor at CSUN.
Stimson is a pioneer in the integration of Excel and SolidWorks using the VBA Application Programming Interface (API).
At Moog, he oversees the development of their space components product line.
He teaches an advanced design integration graduate course at CSUN which includes topics taught this workshop.
His master's project at CSUN focused on "Automation of the CAD design of a positive displacement pump" using the integration of SolidWorks and Excel.
In his project, he developed the concept of using the Excel platform to command, control and communicate design parameters to Excel.
