Ultrasonic probe produces radar maps of corrosion
A rotating ultrasonic probe which provides a "radar map" of its surrounds promises to be a major step forward in the field of corrosion surveys.
This is the second system purchased by Siemens following on from one supplied in Mulheim, Germany last year.
Both Siemens contracts involved collaboration with RD Tech of Canada which supplied the ultrasonic and eddy current instrumentation.
The equipment will be used for field inspections on turbines manufactured by Siemens and others in power stations at various locations.
Turbines operate under immense stresses and require regular inspection to check for corrosion or fatigue.
Testing is also an active way to extend the life of plants and improve cost-effectiveness.
TSIS provides a way to carry out inspections while the turbine is still in use.
This fully automated system can test turbine shafts ranging from 70 to 300mm in diameter and up to 14m long in only one shift.
Karl Quirk, Managing Director of Phoenix, said: "TSIS helped to set the industry standard for the inspection of turbine shafts and the latest version, the TSIS MDH, offers the all the benefits of the original with improvements such as a lightweight inspection head and is easier to deploy.
The range has proved popular with companies around the world and we are delighted to add Siemens USA to our list of clients".
