Power generation sector spurs demand

Demand for inspection equipment from the power generation sector continues to boost sales for Phoenix Inspection Systems, the Warrington-based ultrasonics specialist.

Demand for inspection equipment from the power generation sector continues to boost sales for Phoenix Inspection Systems, the Warrington-based ultrasonics specialist.

Amongst the latest orders are ones from Siemens Power Generation (PG) in Germany for two major scanners for use on power plants.

The Perm (Phoenix End Ring Manipulator) enables operators to scan generator end rings without removing the rotor from the stator, a major saving for operators.

The SIM (Stud Inspection Manipulator) is designed for the inspection of vessel studs and fixing bolts without removing them.

Both pieces are being supplied to the Siemens PG plant at Muelheim and will be used for field inspections on the turbines of power stations at various locations.

Meanwhile, Phoenix has also won an order to supply a Sage pipescanner to Power Technology, the technical, engineering and scientific focal point of Powergen UK, which is owned by the Eon Group.

The scanner is a flexible system to inspect welds on pipework ranging from 14 to 18in diameter.
