Soil Machine Dynamics in Newcastle has employed liquid cooled Brushless DC Motors on Fiber Optic cable-laying ships for their benefits on small size, high efficiency, and torque at zero speed

Soil Machine Dynamics, Ltd in Newcastle has employed liquid cooled Brushless DC Motors on Fiber Optic cable-laying ships successfully.

SMD is using the motors for their benefits on small size, high efficiency, and torque at zero speed capability.

The motors are being run on Control Techniques Unidrives, furnished out of their Leeds works.

There are more than 40 Powertec BLDC motors used on each machine in order to control the catenary tension of the cables as they are paying off the fantail of the ship on their way to the ocean floor.

Ship power is expensive to produce and the high efficiency of the BLDC motors was a key factor in the application decision.

Additionally, the liquid cooled option offered by Powertec makes operation of the equipment in extremes of weather and temperature practical and trouble-free.
