The newest DDG class destroyers will have anchor winches powered by large brushless motors made by Powertec Industrial Motors.

The newest DDG class destroyers will have anchor winches powered by large brushless motors made by Powertec Industrial Motors.

These will save thousands of pounds of weight and much-needed space on the naval ships as well as operating more efficiently than the very large and heavy AC induction motors previously used.

These motors are part of the US Navy COTS (commercial off the shelf) programme to take advantage of technology available that improves operation.

Although the motors are being modified for the extreme duty of Naval operations, they are based on a standard commercial product normally rated at about 150kW.
