The newest aircraft carrier now being constructed will have warping winches powered by large brushless motors made by Powertec Industrial Motors.

The order, which is complete was based on successful testing at sea of a Powertec motor still operating on the USS Roosevelt carrier.

The motor saves several thousand pounds of weight with a considerable size reduction and provides much higher efficiency than the previously used AC induction motors.

The motor was chosen as part of a Navy programme to use COTS (commercial off the shelf) products in applications where an improvement could be made in operations.

Although based on a standard commercial motor, the motor has numerous modifications to make it suitable for the Navy environment.
