The merits of new-technology large motors
Technical advances give Large Brushless Drive Systems significant advantages over conventional DC or AC induction motors, as Ed Lee describes in this article
Constant torque rating is over 1350Nm from a 56cm diameter motor that is 33cm long.
The motor was tested to torque levels of 2430Nm for one minute.
Due to the electrical winding design for high torque per ampere, the motor only requires 50A to produce the rated 1350Nm of torque.
The initial application will be for a direct drive aluminum can forming application.
The motor can be air cooled with a remote mounted blower.
The drive on these first motors is a hollow, tapered bore for a Morse Taper shaft, but other driving mechanisms are available.
The feedback device is a 12-speed hollow bore resolver, allowing large though-bore drive applications.
Any conventional brushless drive can run the motor, although Powertec does provide Flexmax drive controllers.
