Research aims to solve piston problems

A Poeton Industries product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 19, 2003

Poeton Industries has designed a novel engine dynamometer to support its development of automotive engine coating systems.

Faced with a perpetual challenge to increase engine power, reduce emissions and solve the endemic problems of cylinder bore scuffing, Poeton Industries has designed a novel engine dynamometer to support its development of automotive engine coating systems.

The unusual design, based on a two-stroke model aircraft engine, enables liners and pistons to be easily changed to allow Poeton, by varying bore coatings, piston ring materials, piston skirt coatings and fuel, to measure the influence on performance of each of the rubbing components.

By linking the dynamometer to a PC-driven monitoring system covering power output, emission levels, fuel consumption and temperatures, Poeton has created a powerful tool to help in the current development of its new generation of advanced engine coatings.

The new dynamometer's first application will be to support the development of two new bore coatings - one based on the innovative new plasma electrolytic oxidation treatment for aluminium alloys and the other on composite electroplating.

Target customers for the new coatings will include manufacturers of prestige cars and the demanding autosport sector.

Commenting on the development of the dynamometer and the new coatings, Poeton R and D Director Keith Stevens says that by identifying the right combination of coatings, bore scuffing can be eliminated, resulting in increased engine power and efficiency.
