Pepperl+Fuchs reckons its latest offering is the smallest self-contained ultrasonic sensor in its class.

With a diameter of 18mm and an overall length of just 40mm, the UB300-18GM40 has a sensing range of 300mm and a blind zone of just 30mm, making it ideal for problem free installations in a tight spot.

Ultrasonic sensors have many applications in industry, for example level monitoring, height checking, product positioning and in rewind applications.

But one of the major drawbacks of ultrasonic sensors has always been the size of the housings.

The signal conditioning and electronics used in ultrasonics meant that until quite recently, it was still quite common for the electronics to be housed in a separate control unit and this method has been used for many "space saving" designs.

This latest "small" development will offer big cost savings.

Versions with switch outputs and analogue current or voltage outputs are planned.
