A company supplying underwater cameras for film and TV has specified Protex model 61-655 quick-action, screw-adjustable, draw latches in stainless steel as the best method of securing the watertight camera housings which it designs and manufactures.

For some 30 years, Eyewitness Ltd of Plaitford, Wiltshire, has been selling or renting out underwater and hazardous area camera equipment for shoots ranging from James Bond films to TV drama, plesiosaurs reconstructed for TV, documentaries (such as The Human Body) and commercials.

Eyewitness Ltd underwater housings are designed around specific professional film and video cameras.

With some Arriflex and Sony cameras valued at œ150,000 and used at depths down to 100m, the integrity of the enclosure is paramount, whilst allowing quick and easy access for camera loading and lens changing.

The housings are neutrally buoyant in seawater and made mostly of 10mm aluminium.

They feature external camera controls that are fully sealed and one large O-ring seal between the two halves of the enclosure, compressed by four Protex model 61-655 overcentre fasteners, two on each side of the unit.

The screw adjustment is vital as it allows the compression of the seal to be controlled precisely: the O-ring requires an even pressure to be applied before immersion and accommodates the rising pressure as water depth increases.

The neat safety catch of the 61-655 safeguards against accidental opening.

The steel loop of Protex model 61-655 engages onto one of a range of five catchplates, whichever is best suited to the space and application.

This novel fastening device is available ex-stock from its manufacturer Protex in either stainless or zinc-plated steel.

It measures 87mm long x 22mm deep x 22mm wide (loop) and weighs just 80g.

Yet its breaking strength is 354kgf (3.47 KN) in stainless and 385kgf (3.77 KN) in zinc-plated steel.
