More working days are lost yearly in British industry by back injuries than by any other single cause, and these generally derive from activities involving incorrect lifting or moving.

More working days are lost yearly in British industry by back injuries than by any other single cause, and these generally derive from activities involving incorrect lifting or moving.

Tackling this problem, Protex Fasteners Ltd has designed, developed and manufactured an industry-standard, ergonomic handle to lift more easily awkward or heavy containers and equipment.

The new, large capacity handle, model 94-2116, is of gravity-drop, surface-mounted type with moulded grip.

The breaking strength of each handle is 50kgf (490 newtons).

The key feature of this innovative Protex handle, produced by the Redditch company as standard in mild steel with zinc plate and clear passivate finish, is its thick, black polypropylene or glass-filled nylon sleeve moulded onto a 8mm diameter wire.

The 20mm diameter, non-twisting sleeve is far easier, safer and more comfortable for lifting and moving heavy receptacles.

Initial applications are being identified by breweries and soft drinks manufacturers such as Scottish and Newcastle Breweries for the portable drinks coolers and refrigeration equipment they specify.

However, with the advent of new Health and Safety At Work (HSAW) Regulations on lifting, other industries are likely to follow suit.

Protex can finish the handle in other colours, such as black powder-coat paint, to suit customer needs, or provide a spring-loaded version.

The new product becomes part of the large Protex range of gravity-drop and spring-loaded handles, flush-fitting and surface-mounted.

Many are of unique design, and in stainless steel too, for light and heavy duty use on numerous types and sizes of industrial and commercial containers and enclosures.
