For quick-action clamping of custom diameters from 150mm to 600mm (6in to 24in), there's a new and heavy-duty, high-strength Protex Bandclamp(TM) (model 60-698) in AISI 316 stainless steel.

For quick-action clamping of custom diameters from 150mm to 600mm (6in to 24in), a new and heavy-duty, high-strength Protex Bandclamp(TM) (model 60-698) in AISI 316 stainless steel features a slotted band and screw-adjustable Protex fastener, together giving up to 42mm circumferential adjustment By simply rotating a knurled knob, the 43mm wide x 1.2mm thick band of the 60-698 Protex Bandclamp is adjusted over three slots with centres 16mm apart

Furthermore, the fastener itself provides an extra 10mm screw tolerance.

Protex Bandclamps, manufactured in various ranges by Protex Fasteners Ltd at Redditch, consist of a standard Protex overcentre, lever-action fastener mounted on a stainless steel band custom-made to the required diameter.

The device can be opened and closed repeatedly over long service and is fast and easy to operate, thus saving technicians time and fatigue.

The special design of the new model 60-698 Protex Bandclamp allows for the different base curvatures which accompany the range of large diameters, suiting hundreds of heavier industrial and marine uses for fast clamping.

In one particular case, a pair of model 60-698 Bandclamps, tailormade by Protex to 150mm diameter, are vital to secure safely the gas cylinder which feeds the righting bag of an RNLI inshore lifeboat, a powerful type of rigid inflatable boat or RIB.

The metal cylinder weighs 8.3kg when filled with a mixture of CO2 and nitrogen gases and must remain tightly fastened down by the Bandclamps even when inverted in a capsize situation in heavy seas.

The slotted band and screw adjustment on the fastening combine to give a large size tolerance.

The righting bag is stowed flat, mounted on a rollbar assembly above the twin outboard engines, on the stern of the fast RNLI Atlantic Class inshore lifeboats.

In the event of a capsize, one of the crew of three, clinging to the lifeline astern of the lifeboat, gratefully activates the gas bottle to inflate the sausage-like bag.

Their craft then turns upright in a few seconds.
