The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has specified Protex model 58-1182 quick-action, rigid overcentre fasteners in stainless steel as the best method of securing the lid of their floatable stowage drum enclosing a lifesaving water pump Four model 58-1182 Protex fasteners are spaced at 90-deg intervals to hold down the lid of the drum used on RNLI all-weather lifeboats in the Arun, Severn, Trent and Tyne classes

The steel loops of the sturdy, rigid Protex fasteners on the pump stowage drum engage with dedicated catchplates on the lid, pulling it down positively onto a moulded rubber sealing strip, thus making the cylinder watertight.
The fasteners also have a safety catch, an important feature to prevent accidental opening.
The welded aluminium pump housing is 530mm high and 635mm in diameter.

Fasteners help you go up and down the stairs
Two model 61-1610 Protex quick-action overcentre fasteners are used to secure each side of a stairclimber wheelchair, the Stairmatic, manufactured by Baronmead International.
It is equipped with rope handles and stowed on the after deck, close to the transom handrails, for speediest deployment.
The drum contains a self-priming Yanmar diesel pump that can deliver water at 175 gallons/min (770 litres/min), extremely useful in its primary role of providing a portable pump-out facility for vessels in distress.
The watertight drum allows the unit to be floated across to the casualty where it can be unloaded for immediate operation to help save the leaking or flooding craft, its passengers and crew.
Having a floating pump enables the lifeboat to stay well out of danger if there is a risk of fire or explosion on board the casualty vessel.
The Yanmar unit's secondary role is to supply an emergency back-up fire pump capability for the lifeboat itself.
For this use, a suction nozzle is inserted straight into the sea and fire hoses are connected to the pump.
But, again, quick action is vital.
Model 58-1182 is available ex-stock from its manufacturer Protex in either stainless or zinc-plated steel.
It measures 93mm long x 19mm deep x 22mm wide (loop) and weighs a mere 60g.
Yet its breaking strength is a remarkably hefty 354kgf (3.47 kN) in stainless and 385kgf (3.77 kN) in zinc-plated steel.
A model of similar size and strength, the Protex 61-655, screw-adjustable rather than rigid, is offered for applications where there is less resilience.
Independent British company Protex Fasteners Ltd of Redditch produces the World's largest standard range of more than 500 overcentre fasteners (aka draw latches) and sells them direct to hundreds of industries in over 50 countries.
