By comparison with other methods of passing over a projection, the principle of the hinged extension is a very useful - and indeed unique - method of hugging the full contours of that projection instead of clearing it or just bridging the gap.
The two integral hinges maintain the full freedom and efficiency of the overcentre action.
Such a system would not function overcentre if it did not have at least one hinge or if it consisted of a single piece.
In one really novel application, a row of five Protex hinged extensions hug an overhang in securing the opening side of a portable helicopter blade box.
This long but deceptively lightweight container, designed by Lucas Aerospace, was developed and manufactured for the Ministry of Defence by the Protex customer Cobham Composites Ltd of Shepshed, Leicestershire, a member of the Flight Refuelling group of companies.
