A newly launched, quick-action, overcentre fastening device is finding extensive use in agricultural machinery.

Safety and security are now major issues down on the farm, highlighted by the Health and Safety Executive as the most dangerous working environment in Britain and by rural police forces as a prime target for equipment theft Hence the secure fastening of plant left unattended in farmyards and fields can provide an important part of the solution

A newly launched, quick-action, overcentre fastening device in stainless steel, the Protex model 30-502 (rigid, medium duty and with pin seal facility), is now in wide use throughout agricultural engineering on resilient materials such as typically GRP (glass reinforced plastic).

Stainless steel is best for corrosion resistance in adverse weather and ground conditions.

The product measures 106 x 21 x 18mm, has a breaking strength of 4.33kN and engages with eight compatible catchplates - inline, 90-degree bend or 90-degree reverse cranked bend - the exact choice being determined by the connecting surfaces and the space available for fitting.

A typical application is to hold closed the protective clothing locker on self-propelled crop sprayers, a spray-safe compartment mandatory under the Health and Safety Regulations.

In another use, the 30-502 fastens down the triangular cover on a hopper mounted on the rear of tractors.

The funnel dispenses measured quantities of agrochemicals to a trailed crop sprayer and requires fast filling for high productivity.

The agricultural engineer or farmer may choose to insert his own wire seal into the pin seal holes of the 30-502 to prevent inadvertent or unauthorised access or at least give tamper evidence.

But Protex also supplies its own security pins in three sizes to suit different ranges of Protex fastener.

Rigid Protex fasteners, with safety catches, sealing facilities and key locks as required for security, are in general use for fixing guards to shield PTO shafts: unguarded drive shafts, in which clothing easily becomes entangled, have always been a prime source of farm injuries and indeed fatalities.
