Precision Polymer Engineering (PPE) has manufactured the innovative hygienic seal used in the QuikScale chromatography column range from multinational bioscience company Millipore.
Hygienic sealing is critical to Millipore's scalable purification columns used for therapeutic drug developments in small-scale pilot processes through to complex development and manufacturing operations.
The columns are designed to separate and purify high value pharmaceutical intermediates and products.
The EPDM hygienic seal is FDA and USP Class VI compliant.
Column sealing comprises a seal adjuster and an EPDM column seal that interact to effectively lock the seal in position.
A further three PPE-manufactured EPDM seals are also used to seal other parts of the column.
To make column packing simple and efficient, the seal is mechanically actuated and uses air to deactivate the seal.
This design offers smooth vertical movement, and allows the flow distributor assembly to be gently positioned and secured, without disrupting the packed bed.
The mechanical actuation also means that the seal is failsafe, as no services are required to "make" the seal.
QuikScale chromatographic columns are available in eight diameters, from 70 to 450mm, and operating pressures up to 7bar.
The columns are designed for clean-in-place (CIP), low maintenance and sanitary operation.
