Precision Pipework was asked if it could come up with an idea to circulate seawater in an observation tank containing jellyfish - while not damaging these delicate creatures

The formation of a new plastic division to handle the in-house manufacture of thermoplastic tanks, covers, coupling guards etc came in very useful when Precision Pipework was asked if it could come up with an idea to circulate seawater in an observation tank containing jellyfish It transpired that these delicate creatures suffered damage when in contact with the tank sides due to water movement during water circulation

The damage to the jellyfish also lead to a short lifespan, requiring frequent replacement.

Lead plastics engineer, John Watts, conducted simple experiments with view to create a jellyfish friendly circulation system and coupled this with a newly designed tank overflow area.

Materials used were Durapipe ABS pipework and poly-propylene sheet.

The brief also required a design which blended into the tank to assist the viewing public.

The final design was asthetically pleasing and our last report indicated a previously high mortality rate now reduced to almost zero.

It should be remembered that the constant restocking had been undertaken at considerable cost and we would suspect that the payback time was very short.

The "Jellyfish" project is one of many "engineering solutions" provided to clients over the last forty-four years and in the course of our core business as pumping engineers has tended to take remain largely hidden from view, only surfacing when clients asked specific questions when trying to overcome a problem.

Recent reviews of the company's activities has brought home the extent of the special projects undertaken for this most rewarding side of the company, rewarding mainly from client satisfaction and our chances to create some unique equipment.

Other recent "specials" include: Fire Hose Test Rig for the Middle East; Fully automatic sanitising unit for garlic butter injection machine cleansing for a major UK bakery; In-house design and manufacture of safety/ vent loading valves in ABS material for an international offshore oil/gas operator; Tidal flume tank for marine research, 16 tonne tank with 2 metre x 1 metre observation window for marine research laboratory; Portable gauge testing and calibration rig and mobile emergency dosing rig for water authority; Visual displays - spouting "Whale", "Fog machine" and "Fire breathing" dragon for Swedish theme park; Wine-in-a box pressure test unit for UK manufacturer.
