Fieldbus networks keep baggage systems running
Marco Polo Airport, Venice, uses redundant Profibus DP fieldbus networks on the high-availability baggage handling system that processes up to 4000 items of luggage per hour.
Taking place in January 2003, installer courses are running in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.
It is estimated that 95% of all fieldbus faults are concerned with wiring and installation problems.
These installation problems occur in all fieldbus systems - not just Profibus.
The installer course aims to develop awareness of the common but easily avoided difficulties.
It teaches how to design, layout and test Profibus networks, how to avoid common but frequent pitfalls.
Competence is assessed at the end of the course by means of written and practical examination.
Since the first course in October 2001, over 70 people have successfully graduated.
The installer course is also offered to companies and other organisations "on-site" and already several UK companies have taken advantage of the reduced cost incurred by on-site training.
In addition, MMU runs The "Certified Profibus engineer course", an intensive 3.5-day course that looks under the bonnet of Profibus, concentrating on the details of network operation and the analysis of bus signals.
Again written and practical testing assures the competence of successful candidates.
This course was developed at the Profibus Interface Centre in the USA and is currently offered in Germany, Switzerland USA and (of course) England.
The certified Profibus installer course will be held at MMU on 21st February, 28th March and 9th May 2003.
The certified Profibus engineer course will be held on 25th-28th February, 1st-4th April and 29th April to 2nd May 2003.
