Shell UK Oil Products has chosen specialist engineering company Peter Brotherhood to supply a reciprocating gas compressor as part of a system to produce environmentally-friendly sulphur-free fuels at its manufacturing complex at Stanlow, Cheshire, UK The Peterborough UK-based company will design and manufacture the GBP 600,000 compressor system which will recycle hydrogen used in the process of removing sulphur from fuel

The compressor is being supplied as part of a GBP 75 million investment by Shell in the Stanlow refinery, which is being upgraded to meet new European Union legislation requiring significantly reduced sulphur levels in petrol and diesel.

Peter Brotherhood already has a number of compressor systems at Stanlow, some of which were installed 20 years ago and are still operating efficiently today.

The company won this contract because it could demonstrate high reliability and a technically superior product.

The compressor system will be delivered early in 2004.

It will be supplied on a skid, with an additional skid containing the motor and oil system.

A separate water cooling console will also be provided.

A Hoerbiger Hydrocom control system is being used to reduce the energy consumption of the compressor and improve process efficiency.

The system controls the compressor valves to decrease power usage when reduced flows of hydrogen are being compressed.
