Reciprocating gas compressor bound for Spain

A Peter Brotherhood product story

Repsol YFP Madrid has chosen Peter Brotherhood to supply a reciprocating gas compressor for its refinery in Cartagena, Southern Spain.

Repsol YFP Madrid has chosen Peter Brotherhood to supply a reciprocating gas compressor for its refinery in Cartagena, Southern Spain.

The Peterborough UK-based company will design, manufacture, install and commission the GBP 947,000 compressor system which will be used for hydrofining - the process used to clean diesel fuel.

The block mounted compressor is based around what appears to be a typical four-cylinder reciprocating gas compressor - but two cylinders of the machine will handle hydrogen make-up gas whilst the other two simultaneously handle hydrogen recycle gas for diesel fuel hydrofining.

This compressor configuration is known as a "combination compressor".

Peter Brotherhood has supplied a number of combination compressors to refineries in China which have proved highly successful in operation.

Laurie Roach of Peter Brotherhood said: "We won this contract because we could meet the customer's specification to supply an API 618 reciprocating compressor within a very short time frame and tight budget.

Additional support and professional assistance from Soljet, our agent in Spain, also contributed to the award of the contract".

Peter Brotherhood will supply a tempered water console to control the temperature of the cylinders and packings and to help eliminate condensate from the hydrofining process.

It will also supply a lube oil console to lubricate the compressor frame.

The cylinder lubrication will be provided by a divider block system, which will control and monitor the oil.

The divider block system improves gas valve life by ensuring that the valves are not exposed to too much oil.

This reduces carbonisation.

Repsol will be responsible for supplying the gas coolers and relief valves.

Peter Brotherhood will deliver the equipment to site in March 2004.
