The European Parliament has voted to remove the individual opt out by 2010, which would lead to employers being unable to ask staff to work more than 48 hours a week, says park City Consulting.

The European Parliament has voted to remove the individual opt out by 2010, which would lead to employers being unable to request that staff work more than 48 hours a week.

However, the UK Government is trying to resist this move to continue to allow flexibility in the UK workforce.

Employees have also voiced concerns, as it will remove the opportunity for them to work overtime to earn extra income and remove their individual choice.

At present this amendment is at an early stage so it is not possible to predict whether this will lead to its complete removal.

Park City will continue to monitor the progress of this legislation and will be advising clients in due course.
