Be sure to test electrical installations on time

A Park City Consulting product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jul 25, 2005

Park City Consulting provides some advice on compliance with electrical safety legislation, particularly with regard to periodic testing.

The requirement for safe electrical installations is embedded within the Electricity at Work (EAW) Regulations 1989.

However, what is often overlooked is the upkeep, maintenance and testing requirements for electrical installations.

These requirements are embedded within the Institute of Electrical Engineers/BSI publication BS 7671.

There are several guidance notes that support this publication.

These include Guidance Note 3, prefixed HB 10201:2001 - Inspection and Testing (4th edition).

This document defines how often electrical installations should be electrically tested.

This publication describes domestic electrical installations and industrial/commercial premises and recommended intervals between testing.

The implications for those who fail to obtain electrical certification for premises could include failure of insurance companies to indemnify insurance claims with the outbreak of fire, when the root cause of the fire is failure of an electrical installation.

This could also impact on the employer's duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, namely, to provide a safe place of work with safe access and egress.
