Thermocouple scanner handles 2000 samples a second

Coupled with Pacific's PI660 software, the 6850 conditions, displays and records B, C, E, J, K, N, R, S and T-type thermocouples.

Pacific Instruments has released the Model 6850 thermocouple scanner, which provides uniform temperature references (UTR), a voltage scanner and a USB 2.0 interface for up to 96 thermocouples all in a 2U-high, rack-mounted enclosure.

Coupled with Pacific's PI660 software, the 6850 conditions, displays and records B, C, E, J, K, N, R, S and T-type thermocouples.

Programmable gains from 1 to 5000 provide the highest accuracy for each thermocouple type.

Each channel is digitised with 16bit resolution at programmable rates up to 2000 samples per second.

Data output on the USB 2.0 interface may be recorded and viewed on real-time displays.

The 6850 is available with 32, 64, or 96 input channels.

Each of the 32 channels have a uniform temperature reference that measures and provides the reference junction temperature to PI660 or other software that calculates thermocouple temperatures.

Thermocouple wire terminates to screw-terminals that are located on removable cards at the rear of the enclosure.

Open and shorted thermocouple detection is provided.

Low-pass filters are provided with 10 or 100Hz bandwidth.

The scanner achieves its high accuracy by employing voltage substitution calibration.

An external, NIST-traceable voltage standard is connected and provides reference voltages for gain and zero calibration.

Firmware in the 6850 along with PI660 software automates the calibration process.

As data is digitised, it is corrected for gain and zero variances, making the acquired data NIST-traceable and providing high accuracy.

The 6850 may also be used as a low or high-level voltage scanner.

The differential inputs have 50Mohm input impedance and are protected to +/-25V differential and common mode.

Full-scale input sensitivity is programmable from +/-2mV to +/-10V.

It can also be used to record the output of 4-20 or 0-20mA process transducers.

Programmed settings such as gain and alarm levels are stored in nonvolatile memory and automatically restored when power is applied or the system is reset.

Two alarms are provided with upper and lower programmable limits for each channel.

The alarm limits are checked each time the channel output is digitised, providing the fastest possible response to out of limits conditions.

The alarms are visible in real-time displays and digital I/O modules may be used to provide audible or visual operator warnings or control external equipment.

The 6850 is fully compatible with Pacific's series 6000 data acquisition and control systems.

The enclosure's USB 2.0 data and control interfaces may be connected to a series 6000 system that will then recognise the 6850 hardware and provide the appropriate functionality for control and acquisition.
