Power Jacks actuators used in Wimbledon roof

A Power Jacks product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jun 17, 2009

Power Jacks has revealed that it has been commissioned to help create the retractable weatherproof roof at Wimbledon.

The company designed, manufactured and supplied 42 bespoke electric linear actuators to create locking devices that secure the roof on opening and closing.

The roof is a retractable 5,200m2 folding fabric concertina, which is made from a translucent and waterproof material, tenara.

The material allows natural sunlight in when the roof is closed.

Power Jacks was selected as a prime technology partner in the project by Sheffield-based Street Crane Express (SCX), which was involved in the mechanisation and control of the roof, enabling it to open and close depending upon weather conditions.

Power Jacks provided specialist engineering solutions for the project.

The design and build of the roof was commissioned by a consortium of companies after the All England Lawn and Tennis Club first announced its plans in 2004 for a fully-retractable roof.

The club wanted the roof to be completed in time for the 2009 championships.

The roof, measuring 80m long, is divided into two sections with a total of nine bays of structural fabric, four bays in one section and five in the other.

Each of the nine bays is clamped on either side by prismatic steel trusses.

Altogether, there are 10 trusses spanning 77m across the court.

At the end of each truss there is a set of wheels that glide until the two sections overlap, giving the equivalent coverage of 7,500 open umbrellas.
