PI releases piezo amplifier

A PI (Physik Instrumente) product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Sep 25, 2008

PI has released the E-617 high-powered piezo amplifier for high-dynamics switching and scanning applications.

Its efficient circuitry based on energy recovery technology reduces power consumption and heat dissipation, especially in dynamic applications.

Features of the E-617 include: peak output power to 280W; high source and sink currents to 2A; very low power consumption due to energy recovery principle; output voltage -30 to +135V; amplifier bandwidth to 3.5kHz; short-circuit-proof high performance with high capacitive loads; amplifier gain set at 12.

The E-617 four-quadrant amplifier was designed for precision control of high performance/high capacitance multilayer piezo actuators and positioning systems.

Charge is transferred to the piezo actuator using low-loss PWM techniques.

When the actuator is discharged, the energy not consumed is fed through the energy recovery circuitry for reuse in the next charging cycle.
