QIS is a high performance, distributed information management system which provides a "single window" view of operational data from one or more disparate sources.
It was selected for its functionality, customer support and knowledge of the paper industry.
It is an SQL-based database application, deployed at Kappa SSK, via Citrix terminal server and has been installed in the production, technical and laboratory areas of the mill.
The project was driven by the need to replace an outdated system and an increasing requirement for real time information and reporting of product quality data to aid the efficient running of the mill.
Initially, QIS was installed on a 30-day trial basis to assess suitability, functionality and performance.
Training was given to operators and the existing QC database converted into QIS.
Following a review by the project team the decision was taken to switchover to QIS as the live system.
According to Katie Chong, Process Development Engineer: "The whole project has gone very smoothly with the operators quickly adjusting to QIS".
"Already we are starting to get more information than with the old system and users can now quickly run reports to see performance figures".
Tim Perris, QISoft Business Manager comments: "Kappa SSK is one of the most respected companies within the industry and has gone through a rigorous selection process to select QIS".
"Using the array of analytical and reporting tools within QIS, Kappa SSK now have the information in one place to support and monitor process improvements and improve efficiency".
"We welcome them as a customer and will continue to provide support and training to help them achieve these targets".
Future plans include the deployment to other mill areas and to interface QIS with process and business systems to automatically collect data in order to provide a complete "information" picture.
