As part of its customer care programme, leading industrial lubricants manufacturer Q8 Oils is now offering a quick reference chart of basic do's and don'ts to all UK users of metalworking fluids.

Working with metalworking fluids can present health hazards, especially if recommended working practices are not adhered to.

Although the vast majority of bacteria and fungal infections that occur in metalworking fluid systems are nonpathogenic, it has been demonstrated that aerosol mists contaminated with such organisms can cause respiratory problems.

In addition, a number of cleaners, biocides and emulsifiers will cause skin sensitisation and allergic reactions.

The publications offered by Q8Oils are aimed at educating users to these hazards and how to avoid them.

Following the guidelines will also help maintain the quality of the metalworking fluids in use thereby prolonging both machine and tool life.

The wallchart is part of a guidance package prepared by the Health and Safety Executive and is further supplemented by a 44-page detailed guide compiled by Q8Oils on the correct use and working practices concerned with metalworking fluids.

This guide includes sections on storage, mixing and disposal of soluble fluids as well as maintenance and machine cleaning advice plus a trouble-shooting section to help users solve the most common problems associated with metalworking fluid products.

The guidance package "Working with metalworking fluids" has been prepared by the Health and Safety Executive in conjunction with Amicus-AEEU, BLF, EEF, Envirowise, the Institute of Petroleum and the MTTA.
