An end to cobalt leaching

A Q8 Oils product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Nov 28, 2003

A new water-based lubricant offers a solution to the problem of cobalt staining and contamination of grinding fluid.

A common problem when surface-grinding hard metals is cobalt staining and contamination of the grinding fluid.

This is caused by amine attacking the cobalt and leaching it out from the tungsten carbide in the workpiece.

Cobalt is an undesirable heavy metal residue carrying serious health and safety implications including asthma, respiratory sensitisation and allergic dermatitis.

Although it causes no physical damage to the workpiece it will turn the grinding fluid first pink and then deep red to almost black, leaving a sticky residue that can set hard causing instruments to seize or stick.

Now, thanks to Q8 Oils' Beethoven x27 (the name is derived from the atomic number for cobalt - 27), leaching is a thing of the past.

Specifically designed for grinding applications this particular formulation is a fully synthetic, water-based solution with excellent lubricity properties that does not react with the cobalt content of hard metals at all.

As a result the fluid retains its translucency with no discolouration.

The product, like all Q8 Oils' general-purpose cutting and grinding fluids is bio stable thereby protecting the operator from high bacteria levels without subjecting them to hazardous chemicals.

Beethoven x27 is a part of the broad range of high performance, water based cutting and grinding fluids developed by Q8 Oils in partnership with metalworking clients to provide optimum results across a wide range of materials and applications.

Available through Cromwell tools and the Q8 Oils distribution network, stock products are available on 48 hour delivery to any location in the country.

This level of customer service is further enhanced by with a team of experienced service technicians that provides full technical support and a condition monitoring service for UK customers.
