The Appliance Controls Division of Invensys has licensed world-wide rights to Quantum Research Group's Qmatrix capacitive touch technology chips Invensys is already engineering and producing through-glass appliance touch controls using this technology for its OEM customers

The technology has been designed into several kitchen appliances that will appear on the market this year.

QMatrix chips project sense fields to create key panels with no moving parts.

They are continuously self-calibrating and work through almost any panel material; like glass, plastic, synthetic marble, or wood.

Keys can be configured within a panel to create a wide mix of shapes, sizes and operational sensitivities.

Because the keyboards do not require passive electronic components at each key location, the sensing matrix secured to the reverse side of the substrate can be manufactured from flexible Mylar, which can conform to a variety of contours.

Applications include home appliances, vandal resistant and weatherproof keyboards and keypads, info kiosks, instrument control panels, touch screens, cash machines, machine tool controls, power and lighting controls, and computer peripheral controls.

Quantum and Invensys will build on their relationship in the coming years to create market-leading solutions in many industries.

The relationship gives OEMs a rapid path for product development and turnkey manufacture using state-of-the-art touch controls in conjunction with industry leading appliance control system solutions.
