Regional finalists in the HSE's Health and Safety Award category of the National Business Awards have been announced.

Regional finalists in the HSE's Health and Safety Award category of the National Business Awards have been announced ahead of a series of prestigious regional National Business Awards ceremonies taking place around the country in July 2006.

Major corporates and large private companies compete alongside brand new ventures and SMEs in the search for their region's top business performers.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown has described the Awards as "the Business Oscars".

The winners will go forward into the National Business Awards, sponsored by Orange, and if short-listed, join around 1,500 industry leaders, business influencers and other VIPs on November 7th 2006 at Grosvenor House, London.

Winners that night may then go forward to the European Business Awards being held in Brussels in January 2007.

"The Health and Safety Executive is pleased to announce the finalists for the regional health and safety category in the National Business Awards".

"Health and safety is increasingly seen by all organsations, public and private sector, large, medium and small, as a key business risk that has to be properly managed".

"There is a growing appreciation too of the benefits derived from the effective management of health and safety both for the well-being of the business and for the employees".

"HSE is recognising this not only in their sponsorship of this award but also in the support they are providing to business through more".

"its campaigns, advisory and information services and in carrying out its regulatory role" said Bill Callaghan, Chair of the Health and Safety Commission.

The National Business Awards Chief Executive, Adrian Tripp said, "We have recently seen a marked increase in the attention entrepreneurs and business generally are attracting - from the Chancellor to prime time television".

"Businesses at every level - regional to pan-European - are taking the valuable opportunity to gain recognition for the important role they play in the health of the economy".

"It is quite possible that one of the regional finalists announced today will go on to the European Business Awards recognised as a beacon of success and good practice".

The National Business Awards are organised by the leading events and publishing company Quest Media to promote and showcase excellence throughout the British business community.

The competition is open to companies of all sizes and sectors to celebrate the diversity of business in the UK.

"I am constantly impressed by the quantity and quality of the entries for the National Business Awards".

"The entrants demonstrate enthusiasm and motivation to succeed and I challenge anyone who doesn't believe British businesses are at the vanguard of innovation and growth to meet with these finalists".

"All the finalists to the regional programme have shown passion, determination and originality - we wish them all luck in the final rounds of judging", said Alastair MacLeod, Vice President Business Solutions, Orange UK, commenting on this year's finalists.
