Chisso Corp is to start production and sales of its Funcster long glass fibre reinforced PP in the US market.

Paul Murayama, General Manager of Chisso's International Business Department said: "We have had an excellent reception for our Funcster long glass fibre reinforced compounds with Japanese transplant Tier 1s and OEMs as well as the Big 3 and European companies".

"Our intention is to target the rapid growth, high performance sectors such as front end modules and we have a solid base of approvals and commitments in North America on which to proceed with the new plant".

"European production of Funcster will follow within two years".

The new facility with an annual capacity of 10kt will be located in Covington, GA in a portion of an existing fibrevisions (Hercules) plant.

The Chisso plant is under construction and is targeted for startup in January of 2006.

US sales headquarters will be in Detroit.

The name of the new company being established by Chisso is Comusa.

Bob Eller, President of Akron, Ohio-based consultant firm, Robert Eller Associates said: "The LGF-PP sector is poised for growth in structural and semistructural applications in automotive and nonautomotive applications".

"The Chisso materials and compounding technology gives them an edge over competitors with respect to properties and processibility and Funcster has demonstrated its superiority in rigorous multi-year trials at several automotive OEMs and Tier 1s in the US and Japan".
