Objectives set for the design of the transmission included that it should be lightweight, reliable and durable, a particular consideration for the 2007 season when regulations dictate that transmissions must be capable of use in two complete events without service.
Prototype units were produced by Ricardo ready for dynamometer and vehicle testing within six months of the start of the programme and a further two months rigorous development testing followed before the unit's successful competition debut in the November 2005 Rally in Australia.
Since then, the BP-Ford team's Focus RS World Rally Cars have claimed an early lead in the 2006 championship with an outright win at Monte Carlo (20th to 22nd January).
Ricardo CEO Dave Shemmans said: "The World Rally Championship is an extremely demanding competition environment in which the durability and reliability of the car and its systems and components are a fundamental prerequisite for success".
