Software speeds automotive engine design
Ricardo has released a new version of its market-leading Wave engine modelling package.
First launched in 1906 and re-established to recognise excellence and innovation in automotive technology after a gap of five years in 2002, past winners include Rolls-Royce, Dunlop, Lucas and Jaguar.
The specialist engineering support provided by Ricardo to Bugatti in the development of the DCT for the Veyron received high praise from the RAC Dewar Trophy Committee.
"Ricardo's DCT is a breakthrough in advanced gearbox design that places the company ahead of its larger global competitors", said John Wood, Dewar Committee Chairman.
"The technology is scaleable and sets a new standard for the smooth continuous delivery of power".
"Ricardo is a worthy winner and we are delighted to be able to continue celebrating true engineering prowess with the Dewar Trophy".
In particular, the judges were impressed by the professional and focused approach of the team at Ricardo who supported Bugatti on the design and engineering of the transmission and driveline system.
The problems facing them were immense.
They had to design and manufacture a seven-speed gearbox and transmission control system while meeting all the normal Volkswagen standards of reliability and durability.
And while the DCT has been first developed for the Bugatti Veyron, which at over £800,000 is beyond most motorists' dreams, Ricardo believes the technology will have widespread application throughout the motor industry.
Bob Allsopp, Executive Director of Ricardo, said: "The whole team is thrilled to receive the highly prized Dewar Trophy from the RAC".
"Ricardo has won this award once before and it has gone to many great names before us".
"This latest success reconfirms Ricardo's place among an elite group of engineers, scientists and innovators spanning a century of automotive development".
