Software improves encoder performance

Rotary and linear encoders improved by PC-based software that provides comprehensive calibration, set-up optimisation and real-time diagnostics.

A component of Renishaw's Signum family of rotary and linear encoders is the PC-based Signum software that provides calibration, set-up optimisation and real-time diagnostics The result is simplified installation of the encoder system and on-going system maintenance

The Signum Si interface is connected to the PC via a USB connector and provides real time signal monitoring, read-head pitch adjustment, calibration of the encoder reference mark and incremental signals, remote system monitoring, error logging and system configuration analysis.

Users of the software can monitor signal level and system performance in real time in several ways.

These include a signal strength meter, Lissajous plot and infra-red feedback meter (AGC drive).

System monitoring can take place remotely during real-time closed-loop operation.

The software has an indicator that enables fine adjustment of the read-head pitch, which is useful for read-head set-up on small diameter rings.

Remote calibration of the reference mark and incremental signals can be done with the press of a button.

The calibration data is then saved to disk for fault-finding and to provide system performance history.

System error logging is a feature of the software, with a log made of all alarms or warnings that have occurred since switch-on or the last reset.

The warning function alerts the user to conditions that are less than optimum, while the alarm indicates when an error has occurred.

Analysis of the interface is available to users at all times, providing information on system configuration such as resolution, clock frequency and error and warning outputs.

The software is supplied with a technical info guide which provides basic contextual help and a comprehensive technical guide.

The guide contains a more detailed explanation of system functions and fault-finding.

A multilingual user interface allows a choice of English, German, Italian and Japanese languages. Request a free brochure from Renishaw ...
