Over 120 senior engineering professionals attended this year's MWP Summit conference, held at the Rolls Royce Learning and Development Centre, Derby, UK on 29th March 2007.
Supported by lead sponsor Renishaw, and running under the title of Sustainable Manufacturing in the 21st Century, the event was attended by directors and managers of engineering companies who wanted advance intelligence on the key issues and challenges they will face in the next five years.
A wide range of topics was covered during the conference, dealing with issues such as the opportunities and threats posed by new technology, practical ways to improve production efficiency, advice on health, safety and environmental issues including WEEE compliance, employee protection and motivation, and the stimulation of strategies for engaging with global market developments.
The programme was created by the engineering journals MWP and The Engineer, and featured respected speakers from SMEs, OEMs, RandD organisations and business advisers, including Rolls Royce, The Rapid Manufacturing Research Group, Cobra UK, eco3, Schaeffler UK, the Association of Manufacturing Excellence and PERA.
A welcome address was given by Renishaw's Assistant Chief Executive, Ben Taylor, who outlined the reasons why the company supports sustainable manufacturing, why it continues to carry out the majority of its manufacturing within the UK, and why it has recently announced large investments in a new machine shop facility in Gloucestershire.
Attendees were also presented with a document, "Renishaw's journey towards predictable productivity", that describes the last 15 years of manufacturing at Renishaw, and the many operational and culture issues that have been addressed to allow it to continue manufacturing profitably in the UK.
