In his speech, McFarland will focus on the challenges of evaluating numerous competing ideas during the early stages of product development, a key issue for Renishaw, which annually invests around 17% of its sales revenues on research and development (including engineering costs).
He has overseen a substantial investment in rapid prototyping facilities, enabling faster testing of concepts produced using selective laser sintering and fused deposition modelling techniques.
Renishaw's in-house capabilities also include rapid prototyping of PCBs, injection moulding and vacuum casting of plastic parts, all aiming to reduce design lead times.
McFarland heads Renishaw's group engineering function and is also responsible for group patents.
The TCT 2007 Conference will concentrate on actual applications of RM from the global marketplace, with a special focus this year on the real issues of implementation.
Other key industry figures that have already confirmed that they will participate in the conference programme include Terry Wohlers of Wohlers Associates, Dan Johns of Airbus UK and Tim Steward of Contour Premium Aircraft Seating.
