Renold Chain has launched the latest version of Smartlink, its unique chain data-logging system, with a reduction in size to half that of its predecessor.

The Smartlink unit, which is attached to the chain's side plate to measure dynamic loading whilst the chain is in use, has been reduced in size to just 11/4" x 1".

It may now be used on chain sizes down to 11/2" pitch, increasing the range of applications that may benefit from the technology.

Renold has said that further size reductions are likely in the near future and that the next version will be half the size again.

The Smartlink unit enables on-site testing of chain by recording dynamic data such as peak and shock loads whilst the chain is in use.

It enables engineers to determine the causes of premature chain failure and to more accurately calculate an optimum chain size for an application.

The latest version of Smartlink now transfers this data by infrared directly to a hand-held PC using bespoke software on which the results may be analysed.

Earlier versions of Smartlink relied on a hand-held remote that collected the information for downloading onto a desktop PC.
