Chain survives tough timber application

A Renold Chain product story

Maintenance engineers at a Weyerhaeuser plant wanted to increase the wear life of chain fitted to a grading tower drive that was lasting no more than two months before it had to be replaced.

Renold Synergy has been used on a tough application at a US timber mill owned by Weyerhaeuser, one of the world's largest manufacturers of wood, pulp and paper products.

Maintenance engineers at the company's plant in Pennsylvania wanted to increase the wear life of chain fitted to a grading tower drive that was lasting no more than two months before it had to be replaced.

The problem was that the drive was difficult to access and replacing the chain was a long and laborious process.

Renold recommended Synergy chain as a possible solution and so far it has been operating for more than nine months without needing to be replaced.

It has eliminated the need for four chain replacements and, in addition to the labour savings and downtime it has cut, the new Synergy chain has saved the company over US $1100 in the cost of replacement chain.

As Synergy is still showing no signs of wear the full extent of the savings are yet to be seen, but the company is so pleased with the results that they are considering fitting Synergy chain on machinery throughout the plant.
