Text display controls bar code checking system

A Red Lion Controls product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Nov 2, 2000

Lucas Power and Control's BarCheck provides a fast, reliable bar code verification system which uses the latest bar code scanners together with Red Lion's CL05 text display interface and control unit.

With more suppliers printing bar coded labels on their products "in house", it is vital that they can be sure that their customers are receiving the products correctly labeled.

Ultimately, costs and disruption associated with mislabeling and unreadable, or missing, labels are felt by the supplier through returned product, a loss of customer confidence and, in some cases, fines.

To prevent labeling mistakes and inspire customer confidence, Lucas Power and Control's BarCheck provides a fast, reliable bar code verification system which uses the latest bar code scanners together with Red Lion's CL05 text display interface and control unit.

On production line labeling units and end of line check stations, the system will scan products at a rate of up to 250 per second, regardless of orientation, to ensure that they are carrying correct and readable bar codes.

At set up, or at the start of a different product type or batch being processed, the system allows operators to manually input the bar code to be checked, confirm any alarm faults and set the system parameters, (for instance, the degree of readability required).

Should errors occur, the CL05 provides visual or audible alarms or the production line can be programmed to stop automatically.

All the control functions for the verification system are carried out by the CL05.

The codes are read-in direct to the unit and, through Red Lion's Edict 97 programming software, the CL05 can interface with any control system and be programmed with password protection options for event monitoring, product change control and count reset.

For easier monitoring, an extra RS port on the CL05 can be used for an overhead display or batch/production reporting facilities.
