If you're interested in the newest products and services relating to the metrology, quality and production engineering sectors, almost every exhibitor is planning launches at Inspex 2001

If you're interested in the newest products and services relating to the metrology, quality and production engineering sectors, then Inspex 2001, which runs from 30th October to 1st November in Hall 8 at the NEC, is certainly the place to be! The latest information indicates that almost every exhibitor is planning to launch new equipment or services at the show, thereby taking advantage of its unchallenged status as the UK's largest event designed specifically to meet the needs of the metrology, quality and production engineering community While details of some product launches will, as always, not be finalised until nearly the last minute, here's just a small selection of the innovations which Inspex visitors will be able to see and discuss

Brown and Sharpe (Stand 8140) is exhibiting, for the first time in the UK, its new high-speed, high-performance Global co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs) which offer form, dimension and position measurement capability in a single, affordable machine.

These versatile new CMMs can be equipped with a variety of sensors to perform a wide range of measurement and inspection tasks, including first-piece inspection, layout inspection, reverse engineering, tool set-up, process control and archiving.

Also featured on the Brown and Sharpe stand are the PMM-C range of CMMs, which combines laboratory accuracy with high speed to reduce inspection time and cost, and the flexible PROFILE 25 non-contact measurement system for inspecting the external features of round parts.

Leica Geosystems (Stand 8226) supplies a complete range of portable co-ordinate measuring systems.

At Inspex, the company is launching a powerful feature-based real-time build and inspect software package for use with its highly successful Laser Tracker.

This new software provides users with an effective way of linking digital designs to manufactured products.

Two laser trackers will be exhibited on the Leica Geosystems stand throughout the show, and the company promises that visitors to the stand will have the chance to receive a variety of promotional items.

Pyser-SGI Limited (Stand 8283) manufactures optical non-contact measuring systems, custom-made inspection systems, calibration products and measuring graticules.

This company's major Inspex launch is a new range of product inspection kits which provide a convenient and efficient way of designing and building custom inspection products.

StatSoft Limited (Stand 8660) is the official UK division of StatSoft, USA, one of the largest producers of enterprise and single-user software for data analysis, data mining and quality control.

The company is announcing the latest release of its core product, STATISTICA, at this year's Inspex, and is offering stand visitors discounts on upgrades and new purchases.

This release (version 6) offers more new features than any other release in Statistica's 17-year history, and includes a simplified user interface, greatly increased scope for customisation and enhanced web enablement.

In addition, Statistica is now the only data management package on the market to feature built-in Visual Basic scripting.

Mahr UK plc (Stand 8130) is responsible for the sales and service, in the UK, of the complete ranges of Mahr and Federal products.

These range from hand-held measuring instruments, such as micrometers, to sophisticated gear testers and gauge calibration systems.

For Mahr UK, Inspex 2001 is the launch platform for no fewer than five new products: the Marsurf XC10 contour measuring system, the 1840 air/electronic programmable column, the Marscope 222 compact non-contact machine, the 16EXV universal digital caliper, and the B28M universal-length measuring instrument.

And, if all of these new products were not reason enough to visit the Mahr stand, the company is also offering free gifts to all visitors who can show an Inspex ticket mailed to them by Mahr.

PQ Systems Europe (Stand QZ6) is a full-service quality management organisation which offers a comprehensive family of products and services designed to help all industries improve quality, and comply with standards.

On the PQ Systems Europe stand, Inspex visitors will be able to see, for the first time, SQCpack 2000, the latest version of the company's SPC charting program.

This features a new interface with fewer steps between set-up, data entry and charting, plus many other highly practical options.

Leica Microsystems (Stand 8640) manufactures microscopes for the industrial and quality control markets.

The company has chosen Inspex to introduce two new products: the Leica ICM1000 dedicated confocal microscope system for industrial applications, and the Leica VMHT Auto Mot, a microhardness tester for the Vickers and Knoop techniques with test loads from 1P to 2,000P.

Sonatest plc (Stand 8091), a leading organisation in the development, manufacture and distribution of ultrasonic products, non-destructive testing equipment and associated accessories, is introducing a whole series of new products at Inspex.

Among these are the T-Gage IV range of thickness gauges, PR-82 ultrasonic gauges for the automotive industry, MAX bolt testers, Hydroprobe, Metorex Alloy Analysers, and the Scantech Spider.

Throughout the exhibition, Sonatest will be demonstrating a remote-controlled, four-wheel drive, Spider crawler in action.

Data Translation Limited (Stand 8282), a wholly owned subsidiary of Data Translation Inc, Marlboro, USA, is a leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance imaging hardware, software systems and PC-based machine vision solutions.

At Inspex, Data Translation will be demonstrating DTVision Foundry (DTVF) version 3.0 for the first time.

DTVF is an easy-to-use object-oriented machine-vision software package designed specifically for industrial quality control applications.

Visitors to the stand will see the software working in conjunction with a three-axis robot, and they are encouraged to bring their own product samples which can be used to demonstrate DTVF's quick and easy test facilities.

Bowers Metrology (Stand 8162) is a world leader in the manufacture of bore gauges and, with its own products, as well as its agency lines from Trimos, Sylvac and Wyler, is now able to offer innovative answers for most metrology problems.

Bowers Metrology is launching, among other new instruments, the Magnacheck, a self-calibrating gauge designed for the measurement of large internal and external diameters.

Stand visitors will also be able to see the recently enhanced version of the popular Lab-Concept calibration machine.

The Testometric Company Limited (Stand 8200), which specialises in the manufacture of material strength-testing machines, is introducing at the show the new floor-standing 150kN and 300kN versions of its highly successful AX universal strength-testing machines.

Like other AX machines, these can be run in standalone mode where up to 100 standard test methods can be stored within the machine, and comprehensive test reports can be generated with only a printer connected.

Alternatively, the machines can be connected to a computer system to provide full PC control.

Aberlink Limited (Stand 8642) manufactures a range of innovative and easy-to-use coordinate measuring machines and associated products, including the Aberlink 3D measurement software package.

The company has chosen Inspex to launch its new Maximus CMM which has a measurement volume of 1200 x 800 x 600mm.

This new product, the company claims, brings large-volume CMMs into a new era of affordability.

Its products include the Q-Pulse application for quality management systems; Ygnius, the "computer aided thinking" personal productivity tool, and Control, an enterprise process management package.

As a result of detailed investigation into the implications of the ISO9000:2000 standard, the company is launching at Inspex 2001 a new and enhanced version of Q-Pulse.

This new version is specifically designed to help organisations transform the bureaucracy of standards like ISO9000:2000 into valuable management information.

The company is offering special exhibition discounts for the upgrade, and is also running on-stand competitions to win copies of all of its products.

Heidenhain (GB) (Stand 8262) is part of a worldwide organisation which, with over three million of its rotary and angular encoders in current use, is rightly regarded as a leader in precision measurement.

The company has selected this year's Inspex exhibition as the launch platform for its new LIDA 400 linear encoder, which is ideal for use in CMMs and all types of measuring and inspection machines.

Heidenhain's LIDA 400 encoder is easy to install, is very competitively priced, and has superior tolerance to contamination.

It also features on-board reference marks on the tape scale, traverse speeds up to 480 m/min, and measuring steps of 50nm.

The companies and product launches mentioned here provide no more than a taste of what will be on show at Inspex, which is, without doubt, the UK's largest and most important exhibition for the measurement and quality assurance sector.

More information about developments and product launches at Inspex will be provided between now and the opening of the show but, remember, the only way to find out everything that's on offer is to be there! Inspex 2001 is co-located with Manufacturing Week, which is, this year, made up of four highly focussed exhibitions: The Design Engineering Show; Drives, Motors and Controls; Automation; and Production.

Manufacturing Week and Inspex run concurrently from 30th October to 1st November, in Hall 19 and Hall 8, respectively, at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, the UK's most convenient and accessible venue, and they are supported by an extensive programme of seminars.
