High reliability motor repeats the dose - exactly

A Reliance Precision Mechatronics product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Sep 9, 2003

Engineers at Reliance used the company's standard product range to design a one-piece motor and stainless-steel leadscrew assembly for a new high-integrity medical syringe pump.

All mechanical failures are costly, but in the medical industry, equipment failures could cost lives.

Acutely aware of this responsibility, a leading syringe pump manufacturer set out to develop a high integrity syringe pump product that attempted to minimise human error, was tamper proof, repeatedly delivered an accurate drug dosage and was highly reliable.

The company incorporated improved software, which restricted access to the pump settings by password.

Motion control software, however, is only as good as the hardware it controls, and for this reason the engineers turned to Reliance Gear Co of Huddersfield to supply a high-accuracy motor and leadscrew drive assembly.

Engineers at Reliance used the company's standard product range to design this one-piece motor and stainless-steel leadscrew assembly.

They developed special assembly techniques, which enabled the system to achieve the required level of accuracy without the use of a coupling, support bearings and associated housing.

They delivered a cost saving and space saving assembly to the customer with no loss of accuracy, reliability, or quality control - all the Reliance assemblies are serial numbered with full traceability.

At the moment the syringe pumps are used in hospitals, but Reliance's customer is developing a mobile unit for use by outpatients at home.

The low-friction, lightweight leadscrew assembly is ideal for a battery-powered version, maximising battery life.
