Simple ring fastener tackles appliance
challenges

An apparently simple ring fastener could prove the solution to a cross-section of annular component assembly challenges encountered in the domestic appliance industry.

An apparently simple ring fastener could prove the solution to a cross-section of annular component assembly challenges encountered in the domestic appliance industry The tolerance ring is a circular spring steel fastener with waveforms around its circumference that locate against the surfaces of mating components to create a secure interference fit

The rings can be engineered to provide an immovable joint at exceptionally high torques, or to slip within predefined parameters to avoid torque overload and resultant component damage.

Explains Richard Treharne of tolerance ring specialist Rencol: "The rings are used very widely in the automotive sector and in hard disk drive manufacture.

Common applications include mounting bearings in electric motors.

However, whilst literally millions of tolerance rings are used in these applications, their adoption in appliance markets remains in its infancy.

There are numerous applications that can undoubtedly benefit as product designers become more familiar with this type of fastener".

Among potential applications highlighted by Rencol are mounting belt drive pulleys, tub base housings, brush holder mounts and fixing bearings onto alloy shafts.

In pulley installations, for example, using one of the precision rings will generally prove more economical than keyways, allow larger component tolerances and eliminate backlash on directional reverse.

Ease of assembly, compensation for differential thermal expansion and elimination of the need to use epoxy glues and set screws are among the other benefits quoted. Request a free brochure from Rencol Tolerance Rings ...
