Filters ensure panels comply with EN 61000-3-2

A REO product story

The CNW motor choke and mains filter combination units allow panel builders to ensure that their panels comply with EN 61000-3-2 while simultaneously saving panel space

Harmonic voltages in the power supply can raise the temperature of electrical equipment and therefore inhibit performance.

As a result of the increased application of high-speed switching equipment, this has become an increasing problem.

A new European Union EMC directive, EN 61000-3-2, which will affect all electronic equipment under 16 Amps current rating supplied after the 1st January 2001, also relates to Harmonics and Flicker and will prevent equipment effecting the mains sine wave.

It is widely anticipated that this legislation will gradually be extended to cover equipment with higher current ratings As a result of these factors, and to give panel builders the comfort of knowing that wherever their panels may ultimately be placed they will be protected from harmonics, REO now has a range of solutions which can suppress the interference and also reduce operating temperatures and the size of conductors.

Mains harmonics occur when electrical equipment requires a non-sinusoidal current.

This is true of high-speed switching equipment which uses devices such as IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) operating in conjunction with large capacitors.

Users can overcome harmonics problems by upgrading existing equipment and cables or by controlling the harmonics coming onto the supply.

REO offers mains chokes which suppress interference through PFC (power factor correction) as part of a complete EMC solution.

The mains chokes are designed to operate down to 50Hz and smooth both symmetrical (real) current and the asymmetrical (interference) current.

They also reduce rapid voltage rises and improve noise attenuation which complements the damping of a conventional mains filter.

Recognising the growing need for PFC in the drives industry, and in anticipation of tightening legislation relating to the industrial sector, REO has also introduced a range of motor choke and mains filter combination units - all in one box.

This CNW series allows panel builders to ensure that their panels comply with the new regulations while simultaneously saving panel space, reducing wiring and enabling operating temperatures and conductor sizes to be reduced.

There is an ongoing debate as to whether harmonics should be suppressed to legally monitored levels but in the meantime manufacturers and buyers should be aware of, and prepare for this eventuality.

Reo's range of motor chokes and combination filter/choke units offer a ready-made solution.
