Reo AC power supply used in Downhole Compressor

Corac Group is utilising an AC power supply from Reo UK in the development of 'Downhole Compressor' technology, which aims to boost gas output from brownfield sites by 30-50 per cent.
Corac said the Downhole Compressor could be used to make otherwise non-commercial projects viable propositions.
The technology can be introduced into a well at any time and can even be employed in wet wells.
During development and proving trials of the compressor, Corac carries out above-ground testing involving operation simulation.
This calls for an effectively controlled power supply to the compressor.
Initially a raw 3O supply is fed to an AC power supply unit, which converts it to AC 3O.
This is then fed to a rectifier that converts it to DC (0-2,500V) for an inverter that drives an onboard motor that powers the compressor.
In this power supply line, the AC power supply from Reo UK is employed as the communication link with a controlling computer via its RS232 serial communication interface.
It is via this RS232 port that Corac engineers can send control data that governs the speed of the motor driving the compressor.
According to David Bryan, embedded systems engineer at Corac, the integral RS232 of Reo's AC power supply has provided a simple yet effective way for the Downhole Compressor's supervisory system to achieve and maintain motor speed control and downhole pressure.
