Chain project boosts bridge reliability

A Rexnord UK product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jun 5, 2008

Four geomet-coated Rexnord Laschenkette 64-1 SHBK chains need to support a load of up to 13 tonnes.

The lifting and lowering of the bridges at the pier in Meersburg, Germany is performed by a chain drive.

The specification of the optimum chain for the application, the chain drive design and the realisation of the project were carried out by Rexnord Application Engineering in co-operation with Obermuller Antriebstechnik, a Rexnord distributor located near Lake Constance.

The maximum loading of each lifting bridge totals 13 tonnes.

This weight carried by four geomet-coated Rexnord Laschenkette 64-1 SHBK chains.

The geomet coating is to protect the chains against moisture and corrosion.

Laschenkette is constructed from plates and pins.

Chain bushing, which is normally the high wearing component of conventional chain, is not used in the Laschenkette chains.

Instead, the rollers are mounted directly on oversize pins.

This improves the interaction between the chain and the sprocket while also facilitating lifting synchronisation.

The larger pins are stronger because they have a 50% greater surface area and an 85% larger sectional modulus.

The design benefits of these increased dimensions are maximised by using double inner plates.

Also, because these characteristics make the bearing surfaces more readily accessible, the chain is easily and more effectively lubricated.

This is complemented by the optimised clearances which also help to eliminate pitting corrosion of the pins.

The chain offers a working life that is three to five times greater standard roller chain.
