Rugged zoom lens takes to the air

A Resolve Optics product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Feb 3, 2006

California-based Sekai Electronics needed to source a unique miniature zoom lens as a key component in its RSC Series head-up display camera.

Resolve Optics was selected by California-based Sekai Electronics to supply a unique miniature zoom lens - a key component in the company's RSC Series head-up display (HUD) camera.

Looking to build a HUD camera that would fit into any aircraft, Sekai Electronics required a zoom lens that combined compactness with flexibility and high performance.

The commercial zoom lens that offered the required remote control, variable focus and ruggedness were typically too large and once built into a HUD camera would obscure the pilots view.

Modifying its type 207 miniature zoom lens, the smallest zoom lens for three-chip cameras in the world, Resolve Optics enabled Sekai Electronics to build a "one size fits all" high resolution colour head-up display camera.

The ruggedised zoom lens designed and built for the Sekai RSC Series HUD camera has variable field-of-view delivering optimised focusing on objects from infinity right down to an object placed just 35mm from the lens.

The motorised iris facility in the zoom lens is ideal for the wide light level changes encountered in the air and captures the HUD symbology without the interference seen with CCD iris.

The zoom lens was also modified to withstand the high levels of vibration, shock and electromagnetic interference static typically found in aircraft.
