Bespoke lens design to improve range camera

A Resolve Optics product story

Resolve Optics has been selected by Specialised Imaging to design a supply a novel relay lens to optimise the quality of image transfer from the intensifier to the image sensor of its ground breaking SIR2 high-speed range camera.

Traditionally most range camera designs have made do with two off-the-shelf lenses placed back to back to transfer images from the intensifier to the image sensor.

However this approach typically has produced a large amount of shading and image distortion.

Resolve Optics was tasked to design and manufacture a relay lens that was both compact and eliminated the shading and distortion effects which degrade the quality of transferred images.

The resultant novel f/2.8, 1 to 1.1 magnification relay lens has enables enabled the SIR2 range camera to produce images with no visible distortion which are equally illuminated across the whole of the image area.

The novel compact relay lens also ensured optimal input into the micro lenses on the SIR2 CCD image sensor that cut off light at angles greater than 12 degrees.
