Bespoke lenses upgrade camera performance

A Resolve Optics product story

A company specialising in motion capture approached Resolve Optics to replace two lenses that formed key components in a 4Mpixel camera.

For commercial reasons companies often seek to incorporate "off-the-shelf" lenses and lens systems in the design of their products.

However, adopting this strategy necessitates accepting risks including having little control over security of supply and that off-the-shelf lenses typically provide compromised performance compared with an optimised bespoke design.

Recently a company specialising in motion capture approached Resolve Optics to replace two lenses that formed key components in a 4Mpixel camera.

Both lenses were being phased out of production by the manufacturer.

The camera used a very large format sensor which was making it difficult to find an alternative secure supply of suitable lenses that provided the image format, resolution and field of view and could be supplied in quantities of 200 lenses per month.

There was also a requirement for costs to be kept down to a minimum.

The Resolve Optics solution to this problem was to design and manufacture a bespoke lens that would provide the required resolution, field of view and image format.

Because the lens was matching the camera performance and image format, something that the previous lenses had not done, the camera performance was improved, thereby increasing the market life of the camera system.

For a small cost premium, over the off-the-shelf lenses, the motion capture camera company was able to gain security of supply for the required 200 lenses per month.

In addition a commitment that the high performance lenses would not be sold to any company operating within the same field ensured that the newly found competitive advantage would be maintained.
