Custom drive design is at the cutting
edge
Regatron from Switzerland has been creating highly specialised drive and control solutions for more then 30 years.
Although standard modern drives cover a significant proportion of requirements, certain applications call for more flexible and sophisticated solutions, presenting a challenge to developers and drive designers Regatron from Switzerland has been creating highly specialised drive and control solutions for more then 30 years

Comp-AC drives control Dome's fountain
Low power AC drives from ABB Automation's Comp-AC range are controlling one of the first attractions that will greet visitors to London's Millennium Dome in 2000.
Its team of experienced engineers pride themselves on devising bespoke drive concepts even when applications seem impossible at first glance.
A recent example of this problem-solving expertise led to the development of a 30kW drive occupying the volume of two clenched fists.
The customer wanted to construct a very powerful wall and concrete material saw with blade diameters up to 1000mm, but it had to be small and light enough for a single operator to position and operate without undue stress.
The main problem was to find a drive able to handle peak power of up to 30kW with the smallest possible dimensions and light weight.
The solution devised by Regatron was a basic drive concept with a sinewave inverter driving a three-phase asynchronous motor with exceptional hard inductive coupling and minimised air gaps.
The design of the motor was optimised using a specialised software package, and the rotor geometry was chosen to deliver a very high speed at moderate torque.
An optimised planetary geartrain reduces the speed by a ratio of 1:8 and delivers very high torque at low speed directly to the saw blade.
The drive is cooled by water, which is also used as part of the sawing process.
The entire drive assembly, including the installation of electronic components in a watertight control box, has been designed and manufactured by Regatron as a turn-key custom project.
It includes a handy remote control box that allow for control of all machining functions using joysticks and pushbuttons that are sited far away from noise and dirt of the machine itself.
